Word of The Golden Trail’s existence is starting to spread! More and more people seem to ‘have heard something about it’ when the subject comes up and it’s gaining quite a bit of press coverage too - see the Media page.
During the Easter break a group of 14 members of the Bendigo BUGs (Bicycle Users’ Group) rode from Robe to Bendigo – and they now plan to make this ride a regular highlight on their annual calendar of events. They followed much the same route as the group who completed the ride as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations last January, and much swapping of trail notes and experiences has taken place since then.
This information will provide useful background for a brand new Golden Trail cycling brochure which is currently being designed in partnership with the Bendigo BUGs.Our existing brochure was aimed at community members and groups to explain the project in general. This new brochure is for cyclists who would like to follow the trail that is gradually being developed. It will provide basic route maps, trail notes and cycling information, and include places of historical or cultural interest and Visitor Information Centre details.
We were delighted when the Chinese Museum in Melbourne recently asked us to collaborate on some exciting plans for a group of secondary school students to undertake a very special version of The Golden Trail in 2008. They will start by sailing from Melbourne round to Robe by tall ship before setting off overland to Bendigo by foot, bicycle and bus, over a period of about two weeks. The involvement and interest this group will generate will definitely help to put The Golden Trail well and truly ‘on the map’!
With best wishes from The Golden Trail Committee
